The Grapes Only Spain Grows

  • The Oenophile Institute 1295 W Spring St Smyrna, GA, 30080 United States (map)

Who It's For: Curious drinkers, students building their grape knowledge, and anyone whose Spanish wine memory is currently limited to Rioja and Albariño.

Spain is one of the great grape treasure chests of the wine world. Somewhere north of four hundred native varieties are still grown across the country, and only a small handful have made the trip onto American wine lists. That leaves a lot of interesting drinking on the table.

This class works through the map and pulls out the grapes worth knowing. Some are famous. Some are quiet workhorses hiding in blends. A few are being revived by a new generation of growers determined not to let them disappear. We taste widely, cover where each grape thrives, and give you names to remember the next time you see a Spanish wine you have never heard of.
